A "problem" I would like to have

Newsweek apparently couldn’t be bothered to watch “The Sound of Music” all the way through, because Maria is the hero of the piece. The nuns singing “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” are singing about suppressing the very spirit that will help Maria save her family from totalitarian oppression. Considering Palin’s indestructible good cheer, if she runs for office again, I wouldn’t be surprised if she used “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” as a campaign song… and thanked Newsweek for the suggestion.Dr Zero

How far we have come

Open collar, no tie and NO FRIGGING BOWING in 1945.
In William Manchester's biography of MacArthur "American Caesar" Manchester writes of Winston Churchill description of the most heroic act committed in World War II.
It was MacArthur's landing at Atsugi, Japan on August 30, 1945 which was two weeks after the cease fire and three days before the signing of the instruments of surrender on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. MacArthur's plane was virtually unarmed when he landed at the Japanese military airfield and when he peered out of the window he saw thousands of Japanese soldiers at attention. MacArthur's aids understandably began fumbling for their side arms but the General ordered them to leave the weapons on the plane. If they wanted to kill us, MacArthur said, that will not stop them. MacArthur left the plane and descended the stairs where the elite of the Japanese Army, that just two weeks earlier would have joyfully sacrificed their lives to kill the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, gave MacArthur a sharp salute.
